The thing that I think makes the Hyperrealistic™ Pokémon designs in Detective Pikachu work whereas a lot of the Hyperrealistic™ Pokémon art on deviantart etc does not, is that the movie didn’t change any of their body shapes.
Realistic Poké fanart usually tries to remodel the starters to look more like real frogs, turtles, and lizards, or make Pikachu look like a real yellow mouse with odd red spots on its cheeks, or make Mewtwo look like whatever terrifying mix of Giger and fetus the artist in question thinks is appropriate for a genetic experiment five times taller than its parent species.
But Detective Pikachu looks like what would happen if you grabbed the original game character art and carefully filled the lineart with a bunch of animal skins found in a texture pack—except, in 3D. That particularly struck me with Magikarp, which was just about perfectly Magikarp-shaped and goldfish-textured. There were slight tweaks in shape to the characters, but for the most part they look exactly the same as in the games.
I think that’s about the best way making realistic Pokémon could have been handled.
